Up until relatively recently, there was little opportunity for UK consumers to return crisp bags and other flexible plastic packaging for recycling. This was due to lack of infrastructure for collection and recycling.
The good news is that since the start of 2021, significant progress has been made within the UK by the UK Plastics Pact and WRAP, of which Calbee is an associate member. This has resulted in a facility for the collection and recycling of different types of plastic together at major UK supermarkets.
There is now a growing list of drop off points, already totalling over 3,000 supermarkets, where plastic bags and other forms of flexible plastic wrap can be taken for recycling. This includes crisp bags but also things like bread bags and confectionery wrappers. Find out what other materials can be recycled at these facilities here. We are also adding recyclability logos to our packs to help our consumers do their bit. Find your nearest plastic bags and wrappings recycling point by searching using the tool below for the location most convenient to your postcode.
The recycled material from this process is commonly used to make plant pots, garden furniture and drainpipes.
Landfill is a big problem for a sustainable future. We’re proud to say that less than 5% of our factory waste goes to landfill (and we’re working on that last few percent)
Food & film: waste that can’t be recycled another way goes to make bio-fertiliser and renewable energy
Crisps: excess is sent to local farms as vegetarian animal food; potato starch is also collected and used in other manufacturing industries
Cardboard: We use recycled cardboard that is FSC accredited and we recycle any waste
From reducing waste to energy consumption, we're constantly improving our operations. From replacing outdated equipment and promoting the efficient use of water, to changing all of our lightbulbs to energy efficient LED’s which switch off automatically when not in use, we believe the small changes, as well as the bigger ones, can make a difference.
We are increasing the percentage of our energy that comes from renewable green sources and have committed to increase this to 100% from 2023.
Reducing food miles and supporting our brilliant British farmers is important to us. When the harvest permits, we source all of our potatoes from growers right here in the UK, most from within just a few miles of our Bradford factory.
At Calbee UK, we partner with a wide variety of charitable organisations who help people in our communities in a whole host of ways. We also support local schools with product donations for special events around Christmas, Eid and Diwali.
